Too Stressed To Be Assessed

February 18, 2016 Marisa Macy

Schools across the country are preparing students for standardized testing. Students participate in ongoing assessment linked to classroom teaching. Many students will be assessed to determine if they are eligible for a special education program.

With all this testing going on can children become too stressed to be assessed? Absolutely! Students may not perform up to their potential when their basic needs are neglected. Let us not lose sight of what students need.

Dear Teacher,

Today is not a good day to assess.

Some things have been happening with me, I confess.

My life is an abysmal mess.

I haven’t eaten, I’m tired, and need to convalesce.

What I really need today is a recess.

You are kind and great knowledge you possess.

My strengths and areas of need you address.

By rescheduling you will bring me happiness.

Please hear my plea—today I’m too stressed to be assessed!

Sincerely,

Your Student
